Contentment, it’s not easy. And no wonder when we are bombarded constantly with the world telling us we “need” stuff. We can’t expect contentment to just find us when we are pining for what we don’t have. Here’s a quote by John Piper that struck me today.
“I am wired by nature to love the same toys that the world loves. I start to fit in, I start to love what others love. I start to call earth home and before you know it I’m calling luxuries ‘needs’. And I’m using my money just the way unbelievers do. I began to forget about the war. I don’t think much about people perishing. Missions and unreached people drop out of my mind. I stop dreaming about the triumphs of grace. I sink into a secular mindset that looks first at what man can do, not at what God can do. It is a terrible sickness. And I thank God for those who have forced me again and again towards a war time mindset.”
Contentment is something we have to fight for. It’s never going to happen though without the right mindset. Christ is more than enough! Let’s keep fighting together. The stakes are too high for us to crave temporal things.
Keep fighting, be generous, be grateful
