Now down to business 😉
Just wanted to share with you what I realized during my devotional time. I was reading through Hebrews 11, the “Hall of Faith” as it is sometimes referred to. Many pillars of the faith mentioned here and their stories are all familiar. People like Abraham, Isaac, Noah, Moses etc. If you haven’t read it or it’s been awhile check it out.
So as I’m reading this, I’m thinking back on the stories about these people and I start asking myself why the writer would choose these guys and gals as examples of faith. And I kept thinking of the times that they didn’t have faith. For example: Abraham had a child with his wife’s maidservant trying to fulfill God’s promise to him on his own. Sarah laughed when God told her she would give birth in her old age. Jacob tricked his father into giving him the blessing of the first born by pretending to be his brother. Moses argued with God at the burning bush and made excuses as to why God needed a different man to free Israel from Egypt. The children of Israel wandered in the desert for 40 years because they didn’t believe they could defeat the giants in the Promised Land. Gideon tested God not once but twice. Samson broke every Nazarite vow he took.
So why are these people examples of faith? Two observations but you have to keep reading into chapter 12 to find out.
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:1-2
You see, these are such great examples for us because they are just like us. They doubted just like we doubt. But I believe they are great examples of faith because they remained faithful. The second reason is the power of our faith does not come from the enormous amount of faith we have but the enormous, all powerful, almighty God we put our faith in!
I don’t know what your facing right now. Maybe you feel like you don’t have faith. I want to encourage you. Look to these examples and know whatever your facing that God is faithful even when we are faithless. (2 Timothy 2:13)
Remain faithful until you are faith filled. – Allison
